Sooners win Tornado Alley 7’s!
June 30, 2011
The Sooner Men took home the Tornado Alley Championship on their home turf Satruday defeating Oklahoma City going away in the final. OU rolled the entire day and showed a combination of finesse and physicality to bring home the hardware.
In pool play the Sooners jumped out quickly and showed what was to come the rest of the day- lots of athletic tries and big hits on defense. The squad was a mix of old and new which was the perfect mix of experience to exploit weaknesses and the raw talent to finish the job.
Standouts early Tyson Meek, Nate Berry and Eric Meyers though many of the Sooners were able to get on the board including Nate Shaeffer and Uncle Boozer.
In the knockout round, OU faced a physical Ft. Sill team. The Sooners were able to keep the ball out of contact and put their young speedsters away on the edge. By the second half OU had opened up the flood gates and won going away.
In the final it was more of the same as OU faced many of their former teammates from the OKC side. In a spirited match that saw many great tries by Arryn Wilkinson, Nate Barry and others, the Sooners soon had the upper hand and didn’t let the OKC squad back into it. Eric Meyers finished off a fine day for himself with a nice 50m try from a feed from Tyson Meek.
Meek would go on to win the MVP of the tourney. The Tulsa squad would go on to win the Plate over Frisco. The Tulsa team sported several current OU college players who played well on the day under the tutelage of former Sooner Roger Gassett.
